Mazzulla took over as head coach for Ime Udoka following the 2021-22 season and has led the Celtics to impressive records of 57-25, 64-18, and 61-21 in his first three seasons at the helm.
Under his leadership, Boston captured its NBA-leading 18th title in 2024, defeating the Dallas Mavericks in five games. However, they were eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals by the New York Knicks in five games last season.
Mazzulla is entering his seventh season with the organization after spending three years as an assistant coach.
“This is truly a blessing. I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children,” the 37-year-old shotscaller said in a press statement.
During the 2024 Celtics title run, the team finished with a 16-3 postseason record (.842), the second-highest playoff winning percentage in the league since the first round expanded to a best-of-seven series in 2002-03 season.
Mazzulla also became the youngest head coach to win the NBA Finals since the 1968-69 season, when Celtics legend Bill Russell guided the team to glory as a player-coach.
“We are very excited that Joe has agreed to extend with the Celtics. He understands the job and has a passion for the Celtics that is only rivaled by our most die-hard fans,” Boston's president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said.
The offseason saw significant changes for Boston, as the team traded away Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, while acquiring Anfernee Simons, Chris Boucher, Luka Garza, and Josh Minott.
