Waiver Watcher: Short-term adds to bolster your squad

NBA.com Philippines’ Miguel Flores has a few players in mind that fantasy team owners can look at as temporary options.

It's that time of year when the winds blow cold and the waiver wire turns into ice. If you’re looking for good adds now for your fantasy team, there probably aren't a lot of long-term solutions left on the free-agent list.

There are still options for those looking for a short-term fix or for streaming this week. As always, we’re taking a look at the options for Head-to-Head, nine-category leagues with 12 managers.

Doug McDermott (20% rostered in Yahoo!)

McBuckets is quickly becoming one of the top adds this week. It’s not that he’s set for a new role or a major shift in the San Antonio Spurs lineup - it’s just that the Spurs are the only team playing five games this week.

So if you already have any of the Spurs’ top fantasy players on your squad, you should be set for a solid week. If not, consider picking up a Spur. McDermott is mostly a 3s specialist, but multiplying his averages by five makes him look like a top 100 player on a three-game week. That’s a pretty good deal.

Also, consider Lonnie Walker (16% rostered) and Thad Young (27% rostered). But both don’t start so their minutes aren’t as guaranteed as McDermott’s.

Danilo Gallinari (25% rostered in Yahoo!)

Gallinari has been rolling lately as injuries have ravaged Atlanta Hawks’ forward rotation. Over his last three games, Gallo has averaged 18.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 2.3 3s, and 55.9 percent field goal shooting in 26.3 minutes per game.

Gallinari had huge games in the playoffs last season, so it’s no surprise that he’s now finding his groove within the Hawks’ offense after early injuries this season kept him out of the lineup. There’s a chance Cam Reddish comes back this week, but he shouldn’t eat up too much of Gallo’s minutes, especially now that he’s hot.

The problem with adding Gallinari now is the Hawks only have one more game this week. The move with Gallinari might be to add him before their game on Saturday to maximize your starter slots and to have him for a four-game schedule next week.

Cody Martin (33% rostered in Yahoo!)

With Terry Rozier and LaMelo Ball entering the league’s health and safety protocols late last week, there are suddenly heaps of minutes and usage rate up for grabs in Charlotte.

Cody Martin is selling like a new Nike drop. Martin has an interesting fantasy game and has always been one of James Borrego’s most trusted bench pieces. He’s scored 19 and 14 points with other goodies in his first two starts without Rozier and Ball. Martin should be a safe add until the end of next week or until the Hornets’ starting backcourt returns.

In a fantasy rarity, Cody’s twin Caleb of the Miami Heat is also worth a look in deeper leagues as Jimmy Butler suffered another back injury.

Other players worth considering

Luke Kennard (18% rostered)

Dennis Smith Jr. (20% rostered)
