What went down
The Dallas Mavericks versus the Brooklyn Nets was advertised as an exciting game, and it didn’t disappoint.
The coaching matchup in itself is a big deal with former teammates and legendary point gods Jason Kidd on Steve Nash going head-to-head.
Before the game, Kidd said this about Nash:
"He's one of the better coaches in this league. His IQ is off the charts. So I know he's getting a lot of slack or a lot of finger-pointing. But he's a young coach. You got to give him time, too."
Nash and the Nets are starting the season on the wrong foot, dropping games to New Orleans, Memphis, and Milwaukee. Tough schedule, yes, but the level of play against elite competition has exposed the many flaws of this Brooklyn team.
Against the Mavs, the Nets were able to meet toe-to-toe, forcing the game into overtime, only to come up short in the extra period.
It took another Luka Doncic classic performance (41 points, 11 rebounds, and 14 assists) to hand Brooklyn its third straight loss—despite a 39-point game from Kyrie Irving.

Ben Simmons came up with a big defensive play to force OT but he still hasn’t found his groove offensively (at one point, Irving screamed at him to shoot it inside the paint—he didn’t).
The Nets dropped to 1-4 while the Mavs are at an even 2-2 win-loss record, bouncing back from a heartbreaking loss to New Orleans.
Big-time ballers
Luka Doncic owned the best line of the night with his triple-double. Doncic is only the 10th player in league history to have at least three 40+ point triple-doubles.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is nowhere near that but the Oklahoma City Thunder guard did put up enough numbers to beat the Los Angeles Clippers.
SGA scored 24 points, grabbed five boards, dished out six assists, and swiped three steals in the win.
Steph Curry, meanwhile, tested out Miami Heat’s defense and won convincingly. Curry dropped 33 points on seven 3s on the Heat, adding seven rebounds and nine assists.
