The Rundown: Caldwell-Pope, Dinwiddie lead Wizards to comeback win over Heat

What went down

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Spencer Dinwiddie delivered in the clutch to steer the Washington Wizards to a thrilling come-from-behind victory over the Heat, 103-100.

After being down by 16 in the third quarter, the Wizards managed to rally back late in the fourth through the combined efforts of Caldwell-Pope and Dinwiddie. 

The two orchestrated a 15-2 run – anchored on four triples – to take a 99-96 lead with 1:43 left in the game. Kyle Kuzma then ensured the win by hitting three of four free throws as the clock wound down.

Caldwell-Pope and Dinwiddie finished with 16 points apiece. Bradley Beal top-scored with 21 points, to go with nine assists and four rebounds albeit with six turnovers.

For the Heat, Jimmy Butler had another all-around showing, posting 29 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Tyler Herro added 20 points.

The Wizards improved to an 11-5 record, half a game behind the Eastern Conference leader Brooklyn Nets. The Heat are not far behind with 11 wins and six losses.

Big-time ballers

It rained 3s in Milwaukee and New York.

Bobby Portis went off from beyond the arc, knocking down six of his seven attempts. He wrapped up the Bucks’ 117-108 win over the Magic with a double-double of 24 points (on an efficient 73 percent shooting) and 15 rebounds.


Alec Burks also fired six 3s – including five in the fourth – for a season-high 20 points to lead the Knicks. Burks turned out to be a good streaming option in fantasy basketball this week, as he also tallied five rebounds, three assists, and five steals.


What he said

As part of the NBA’s 75th-anniversary celebration, NBA TV’s released “Muggsy: Always Believe”, a documentary on Hornets legend Muggsy Bogues.


“I just want to give everybody hopes that this game is meant for whoever has the ability to play the game of basketball,” said Bogues, who had an incredible career despite being the shortest NBA player in history at 5’3”.
