No longer just a ‘fashion statement,’ nail art in the NBA has become a statement of authenticity, confidence, and personal identity—done by the likes of Jordan Clarkson, Jalen Green, and Jared McCain.

What once began as a unique way of showing one’s authenticity by bold pioneers like Dennis Rodman and Michael Beasley has now evolved into a celebrated form of self-expression among today’s stars. | Art by Mitzi Solano/One Sports

In the evolving landscape of the NBA, personal expression has taken center stage, with painted nails emerging as a bold statement of individuality among players.

From the audacious Dennis Rodman to contemporary figures like Jordan Clarkson, Jalen Green, Jared McCain, this trend reflects a broader shift in cultural norms and the league's embrace of diverse identities.

Dennis Rodman

Five-time NBA champion | Seven time All-Defense First Team selection |  7x rebounding champion | Member, NBA 75th Anniversary Team

If there’s one person who can be attributed to this trend, it’s probably Dennis Rodman.

The five-time champion, known for his flamboyant style and rebellious spirit, was among the first NBA players to sport painted nails as he challenged traditional notions of masculinity in sports.

It was a stunning development looking back on his quiet, laid-back personality when he first entered the league as second-round pick in 1986.

Rodman became the one of the faces of the ‘Bad Boy Pistons’ of the 1980’s, teaming up with the likes Isaiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, and Bill Laimbeer to name a few to win back-to-back titles in the 1989-1990.

After spending two seasons in San Antonio, he joined Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and head coach Phil Jackson in Chicago asas the quartet spearhead the Bulls in winning  three straight championships in the mid to late 1990’s.

Rodman’s colorful manicures, alongside his ever-changing hair and eclectic fashion choices, made him a pop culture icon and paved the way for future NBA players to express themselves freely.

Michael Beasley

No. 2 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft | Played for seven different teams in his 11–year NBA career

Beasley has long been recognized for his scoring prowess — he was the 2nd overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Miami Heat — and also for his unique personality.

Among his many distinctive traits, one that stood out was his choice to wear nail polish during games—a decision rooted in personal expression and fatherhood.

Beasley, while still playing for the New York Knicks, revealed in an interview back in 2018 that his painted nails were the result of bonding time with his young daughter.

“I have a bossy four-year-old that picks the colors,” he admitted. Even Beasley's former teammates and coaches admired his authenticity.

In an article written by ESPN’s Ian Begley seven years ago, it revealed that Beasley’s choice to paint his nails — initially mocked by some —  was respected within the locker room because it symbolized his dedication to his family.

Beyond the court, Beasley's actions contributed to a broader conversation about masculinity and self-expression and his unapologetic approach to personal style challenged traditional norms and inspired others.

Jordan Clarkson (Utah Jazz)

2021 NBA Sixth Man of the Year

NBA veteran and former Gilas Pilipinas reinforcer Jordan Clarkson has long been celebrated not only for being an instant bucket-getter, but also for his unique fashion choice.

And that’s why his decision to wear nail polish during games stood out as a symbol of self-expression.

Just how Clarkson made it easy to put the ball into the basket, the way the 32–year-old presented himself on and off the court with beaming confidence showed he truly embraced his individuality.

Jalen Green (Houston Rockets)

Like his fellow kababayan in Clarkson, Green has embraced nail art as part of his fashion-forward personas.

It quickly developed a signature of his personal style and a statement of individuality in the league. Initially inspired by his hand tattoos,

Green began painting his nails to complement his ink, stating that the combination "made it cool" for him.

On the court, the 23-year-old high flyer is more than "cool" — he became a key cog for Houston’s first playoff appearance in five years.

As Green — the no. 2 overall pick in the 2021 Draft — continues to make his mark in the league, his distinctive look serves as a reminder of the evolving culture in the NBA community where personal expression is increasingly celebrated alongside athletic performance.

Jared McCain (Philadelphia 76ers)

McCain is part of the new generation of hoopers to embrace authenticity on and off the court... even before he got to the NBA.

While playing for Duke Blue Devils in college, he stood out not only with his game but also with some unique and colorful nail polish.

This distinctive style led McCain — who got drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers as the 16th pick in the recent draft — to a partnership with nail polish brand Sally Hansen.

It featured a five-shade collection he designed in collaboration with the famous nail polish company.

“I am so excited to announce something I’ve been working on for a very long time now, he said. “I went to the lab and I actually created these—my own nail polish collection with Sally Hansen. It’s crazy to even think when I first started painting my nails that I’d be here with my own collection of colors that I made."

Despite his rookie season cut short by a knee injury, the future looks bright for the 21-year-old after logging 15.3 points in 23 games for Philadelpiha.
