"For us, it's been a rough year as you all know," four-time NBA All-Star Rolando Blackman, who represented Dallas at the draft lottery, said.
He added: "But the important part of the whole thing is that we'll get a chance to move our franchise forward. It's really a great honor, and it's an important piece of the puzzle because we've been wanting hoop down in Dallas."
The stunning turn of events came just months after Dallas traded former franchise cornerstone Luka Doncic to the LA Lakers in a deal that also featured champion big man Anthony Davis.

But Dallas got smoked by the Memphis Grizzlies in the battle for the no. 8 seed, ending one of the most disappointing seasons that saw them make a Finals run a year ago.
It was back in 1981 when the Mavericks picked first overall in the NBA Draft, selecting Mark Aquirre in the process. Just last May, the Dallas Wings — the team’s WNBA team — landed Paige Bueckers as no. 1 selection.
