Mavericks star Luka Doncic has been impressive so far on the world stage. Now, he's in Manila to give Filipino basketball fans a treat.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 has already witnessed its fair share of thrilling moments, but one player who has undeniably stolen the spotlight is none other than Luka Doncic.

The Slovenian sensation has been showcasing his extraordinary talents on the international stage, leaving basketball fans all around the world entertained with his performances.

To qualify for the quarterfinals of the World Cup, Doncic and Slovenia achieved a pivotal 91-80 victory over a loaded Australian team, which includes NBA players like Patty Mills, Josh Giddey, and Joe Ingles.

"It was a very hard game," said Doncic. "Australia had to win no matter what. We went to the game like we had to win no matter what. They have a great team, great players, but I'm really proud of how we played today. We just stayed together no matter what."

Luka, who has led Slovenia every game in scoring, finished with 19 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in the Australia win.

He displayed his solid basketball IQ, court vision, and scoring abilities when he faced Venezuela, Georgia, Cape Verde, and Germany, but against Australia, he raised his game to another level.

It was clear from the get-go that Australia’s defensive game plan was to prevent pick-and-rolls and to double-team Luka on every possession. Coverage panned out in the latter part of the match, catching ball screens and then sending a late double-team to close out any scoring opportunities for Luka.

Luka, of course, did what he usually does. He accepted the defense and moved the ball so other people around him could make the shots.

"I think it was every possession," said Doncic of Australia's frequent defensive pressure. "I had two guys on me in every possession, but I think that's great. That's how we got all of the open looks. We stayed together. Honestly, I think we missed many open shots, but we shared the ball. It was amazing to watch. I'm really proud of this team."

Slovenia will now be facing Canada on Wednesday, September 6, in Manila. In that group, Filipinos will be once again treated to another team brimming with NBA standouts like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, RJ Barrett, Lu Dort, and Kelly Olynyk.

The fact that Luka will face other young international talents like SGA is definitely sending ripples of anticipation across the archipelago. Filipinos, known for their passionate love for basketball, are gearing up to welcome the Slovenian star with open arms.

Being one of the most sought-after players right now in the NBA, Pinoy fans are expecting him to put on a show and go on a deep title run that can lead to an exciting matchup against tournament-favorite Team USA.
