This move could be a strong indication that Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, Thanasis' brother, will stay in Milwaukee to begin the 2025-26 season, following speculation about his future with the team.

The brother of two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo has re-signed with the Milwaukee Bucks on a one-year, $2.9 million deal, after missing last season while recovering from an Achilles injury.

He confirmed his return on social media with a simple tweet, posting a photo with Giannis and the caption: “I’m back.”

Thanasis is currently playing alongside Giannis and their other brother, Kostas, for the Greeks in the 2025 FIBA EuroBasket tournament. Greece is 3-0 in Group C and is among the first teams to advance to the knockout rounds.

The 33-year-old last played for the Bucks during the 2023-24 season, seeing limited action in 34 games off the bench and averaging less than a point per game.

Before the injury, Antetokounmpo spent five seasons with the Bucks (2019–24), with his best performance coming in the 2021-22 season when he averaged 3.6 points and 2.1 rebounds in 48 games.

The move may be a signal that Giannis will stay with Milwaukee to begin the 2025-26 season, after uncertainty about his future with the team

The Bucks were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the third straight year, losing to the eventual Eastern Conference champion Indiana Pacers in five games.

After the season, Milwaukee waived All-Star point guard Damian Lillard and stretched the remaining two years and $113 million of his contract over five years, allowing the team to sign Myles Turner to a four-year, $107 million deal.

The Bucks re-signed Bobby Portis but lost Brook Lopez in free agency and traded Pat Connaughton, raising questions about how competitive the team can remain around Giannis.

Many speculated that the two-time MVP could push for a trade with one year left on his contract and a $63 million player option for 2026-27.

However, Thanasis’ re-signing with the team could indicate that Giannis is likely to stay with the Bucks. The former has career averages of 2.4 points, 1.6 rebounds and 7.7 minutes in 198 regular-season games.
