What went down

The great Pat Riley once said that there are only two things in sports: “There’s winning, and then there’s misery.” For teams that go through the wars, there can be no greater feeling than being able to stamp your will on another team and emerge victorious.

The Denver Nuggets have been doing that as of late. What was a Cinderella-like playoff run last season that culminated in a Western Conference Finals appearance carried over to this season despite a slow start. Now, they boast of the leading MVP candidate in Nikola Jokic, an incredible and versatile weapon in Aaron Gordon, and the steady and sometimes spectacular play of Jamal Murray.

The winning came. It came in bunches. It came so fast with the Nuggets that they were on the precipice of closing in on the top seed in the standings. But as Riley said, there’s more than winning, there’s also misery.

And for the Nuggets, misery came in the form of one ill-fated drive by Murray in the closing minutes of their game against the Warriors.

If you listen closely, you can hear Murray howl with pain as his knee buckled on a drive to the rim. Unable to finish the layup, he fell to the floor and clutched his knee. Steph Curry took one look at Murray, and turned the other direction. The Warriors’ Kent Bazemore was worried like a friend checking on a fallen member of the family.

Murray was down. The misery began to permeate throughout the Chase Center in San Francisco. Everyone knew that something serious had happened.

Now we wait and hope, as Murray gets tested for any possible long term injuries. Speculating will only add unnecessary stress to the situation. All we can do is hope that Murray, one of the best young guards in the league, will be okay. We hope that this is only a minor bump in the road of a long and prosperous career.

Unfortunately waiting can also be an exercise of misery on its own.

Big-time baller

Lost in the shuffle of Murray’s devastating injury is this little tidbit: Steph Curry is now the greatest scorer in Golden State Warriors’ history. With a layup in the first quarter, Curry eclipsed Chamberlain’s 17,783 points to become the all-time leading scorer in franchise history.

By the way, not only did he make NBA history, he also racked up 53 points on 10 made triples, and went 15-for-16 from the free throw line.

He made it look......

......

......

Stephfortless.

What he said

Did you see that?
