Shai Gilgeous-Alexander-led Thunder eliminate defending champion Lakers from NBA Cup

For the OKC Thunder to advance into the quarterfinal round, they need to beat the Utah Jazz in their last group game and hope the San Antonio Spurs lose against the Phoenix Suns.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made there will be no repeat champions in the NBA Cup. 

SGA took over and dropped 15 fourth quarter points, spearheading a much-needed 101-93 OKC Thunder dub to knock off the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers in West Group B play.

He finished with 36 markers, seven rebounds and nine assists, including a clutch three that put OKC ahead by four points, 95-91, with 1:35 left in regulation. 

Jalen Williams added 19 points while Lu Dort added 14 for a Thunder side who improved to a West-leading 15-4 record overall. 

It was also the third straight road win for OKC ,forcing a three-way tie atop of their group alongside the San Antonio Spurs and the Phoenix Suns with identical 2-1 records. 

On the other hand, Dalton Knecht paced LA with 20 points built on six threes, while D'Angelo Russell contributed 17 markers off the bench.

Anthony Davis put up a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double as LA finished group stage play at 2-2. 

After winning their first seven games in the NBA Cup, the Lakers now lost back-to-back. 

OKC will cap off their four-game road trip against the Rockets in Houston while the Lakers host the Jazz in their assignment.
