Memphis Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant will be effectively out of the 2023-24 season, as he is set to undergo surgery on his right shoulder.
The Grizzlies announced the medical update via social media on Tuesday.
The organization explained that Morant suffered a subluxation, or a partial dislocation of his right shoulder during a Saturday training session.
He then reported soreness and instability, which a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed to be a labral tear.
The labrum is a rim of soft tissue or fibrous cartilage, which surrounds a joint to make it more stable, as explained by the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

Morant is expected to be fully recovered for the 2024-25 season.
The 2020 Rookie of the Year, two-time NBA All-Star, and 2022 Most Improved Player of the Year averaged 25.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 8.1 assists in his nine games after serving a 25-game suspension.
The Grizzlies are 13-23 and are currently 13th in the Western Conference.
