The @spurs select Dylan Harper with the second pick in the 2025 #NBADraft!
Harper, a 6-foot-6 combo guard, becomes the highest draft pick in Rutgers men’s basketball history, surpassing James Bailey, who was taken No. 6 overall by the Seattle SuperSonics in 1979.
He averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while shooting 48 percent from the field in his lone season with the Scarlet Knights. A consensus five-star recruit coming out of Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey, Harper chose Rutgers over powerhouse programs such as Duke, Kansas and Auburn.
The son of five-time NBA champion Ron Harper Sr. and to Filipina mom Maria, Harper is expected to slot into San Antonio’s young and increasingly talented backcourt, which already includes 2024 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox, acquired at the trade deadline.
Despite speculation that Harper might not welcome the fit, the Spurs stuck to their philosophy: take the best player on the board, regardless of need.
While Harper lacks elite explosiveness, his feel for the game, playmaking vision and ability to get to his spots have drawn comparisons to Cade Cunningham and, in some aspects, a young James Harden.
His perimeter shooting remains a work in progress — he shot 33 percent from beyond the arc — but scouts praise his shot-making versatility and commitment on the defensive end.
