Extra Pass: Can Suns stay hot against Heat?

The Phoenix Suns are looking to win their fourth straight game when they host the Miami Heat tomorrow.

You’re always in for a treat whenever you watch the Phoenix Suns, especially if it’s a close game.

The team with the best record in the NBA has amassed 30 wins and just eight losses because they know how to close out games. They are a pristine 25-0 when they lead after three quarters. It may sound simple, but more often than not, simple is effective in getting victories.

The Suns hope to extend their winning streak to four games and continue their dominance when they host the Miami Heat on Sunday.

The centerpiece of Phoenix’s methodical and maniacal way of finishing games is none other than Chris Paul. And Paul’s finishing kick against the Los Angeles Clippers in the Suns’ previous game is a prime example of his end-game brilliance. Paul had five assists and nailed a 3-pointer down the stretch to secure the 106-89 win against his former team. He finished with a triple-double of 14 points, a career-high 13 rebounds, and 10 assists. Not bad for a 36-year-old.

The good news continues to pour in the valley as Deandre Ayton, Jae Crowder, and JaVale McGee have a chance to return on Sunday. The trio has been cleared from protocols and it’s now a question of conditioning. Ayton is the team’s leading rebounder with 11.1 per game and the second in scoring with 17.0 points. The Suns have been able to weather the storm despite the lack of bodies in the frontcourt thanks to the play of Jalen Smith and the newly acquired Bismack Biyombo.

On the flip side, the Heat have been trying to stay above water amid the injury bug and protocols. There are several players out for Miami’s side, notably, star center Bam Adebayo because of his thumb. Jimmy Butler, meanwhile, is listed as questionable due to his ankle.

But the Heat being the Heat continue to claw their way to wins, staying in the East’s top six with a 24-15 record. Recently, they outlasted the Portland Trail Blazers, 115-109. Fortunately, Max Strus was able to return to the lineup and score 25 points, along with six rebounds, and five assists, after missing the last four games. Sharpshooter Duncan Robinson was also available after clearing protocols and delivered with 12 points built on four triples.

There is enough star power for the Heat in an attempt to thwart the Suns as Tyler Herro and Kyle Lowry remain in the mix. Herro’s 20.3 points lead the team despite coming off the bench for most of the season. Lowry’s average of 13.7 points and 8.3 dimes will be equally crucial, as well as his leadership and experience.

The Heat may be lacking a few big names but you know they’ll have enough competitive fire to threaten the Suns. And if the game gets close in the fourth quarter, you know the best players will put on a show. Catch the Heat and Suns tomorrow, 10:00 AM on NBA TV Philippines (available on the Smart GigaPlay app and Cignal TV).
