Damian Lillard has taken on a new challenge while continuing his recovery from an Achilles injury.
Lillard was named the new general manager of Weber State men’s basketball, joining a growing list of current NBA players in similar roles.
Before being drafted sixth overall in the 2012 Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers, the nine-time All-Star starred at Weber State and led the Wildcats to two Big Sky Championships and earned two Big Sky MVP honors during his four seasons from 2009 to 2012.
Now, the 13-year veteran adds this new role just two weeks after agreeing to return to the Trail Blazers on a three-year, $42 million deal.

“I believe in what this program represents and the culture that continues to grow at Weber State,” Lillard said in a release.
He added: “The support of our community is vital to the program’s success, and I am committed to playing a greater role in that effort. This opportunity allows me to be even more involved in shaping the future of Weber State basketball.”

As general manager, Lillard will work closely with the coaching staff and athletic department leadership to provide insight, mentorship, and guidance, using his experience at both the collegiate and professional levels to elevate the program.
This latest move follows a trend set by other current NBA players such as four-time champion and Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, who agreed in March to serve as assistant GM at his alma mater, Davidson.
Four-time All-Star Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks will take on the same role at Oklahoma, while basketball legend and four-time champ Shaquille O’Neal agreed to become the general manager at Sacramento State last April.
