The overall No. 1 draft pick did not play in the preseason because of a right ankle injury suffered early in training camp.

The Detroit Pistons have ruled rookie guard Cade Cunningham out for Wednesday’s season opener against the Chicago Bulls at Little Caesars Arena.

Cunningham, the top pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, missed all four of the Pistons’ preseason games after spraining his ankle during the first few practices of training camp.

Head coach Dwane Casey has said that the team would take a cautious approach with Cunningham’s recovery and that they would not rush the rookie until he is ready. Casey also said he

Cunningham to have two or three practices under him before he played in a game.

“He went through some practice today,” Casey told reporters on Tuesday. “We’ll see. We’re not going to put a timetable on it. When he’s ready to roll, he’s going to be ready to roll.”
